One night a few weeks ago during lockdown, Lee and I had a two-hour chat via WhatsApp with some good mates in Durbs who, like us, are wanting to emigrate. They mentioned the Isle of Man (IOM) as somewhere they had been looking into and so, over the course of the following several days, we decided to do some of our own online research.
All I can say is WOW. How on earth this little piece of paradise didn’t make its way onto our radar sooner is beyond me. In terms of safety, security, healthcare, education for Goran, career opportunities for us, leisure activities, proximity to family and friends in Ireland and the UK, well, this beautiful island ticks ALL the boxes, and then some. The Locate IOM website gives a great overview of what their amazing country has to offer expats.
This afternoon I registered both myself and Lee as candidates with Ascentiom, a recruitment agency on the island, to let them know that we would love to relocate as soon as international travel bans are lifted. I saw in their 1 February 2019 blog post Why expats are relocating from South Africa to the Isle of Man that the process can take up to three months, so I emphasised we would like to get started with the job search plus necessary work permit and/or visa applications right away.
There is simply far too much to cover in a single blog post, explaining why we have chosen this tiny island with a huge heart to call our new home. So over the course of the next few months, I will be drip-feeding you guys more details and images to try and paint a fuller picture.
For now though, I’m just going to leave you with a Google Maps screenshot so you understand exactly where the island is; a beautiful satellite image to show you how green it is; and a cool size comparison of IOM vs Jozi (if you’re interested, you’ll find the tool to do your own country size comparisons here).
Till next time! x
